From the venue staff to the coaching staff to the front office, there’s a lot of work that goes on behind-the-scenes when it comes to making a sporting event a success.

One job that requires a lot of hard work and dedication in all sports is the equipment manager. The department usually consists of two to three people who responsible for making sure all of the players’ equipment is good to go whenever they need it and that everything is in place for them by the time they arrive for a game or practice.

The Detroit Red Wings recently arrived in New York for their upcoming tilt with the Islanders, and their social media team decided to give fans behind-the-scenes access and showed them what it takes to be part of the equipment staff on a daily basis.

The first few steps anyone could have guessed, as it involves the staff taking the equipment from the plane to the truck and into the rooms, but finding out that there’s about 4,800 lbs of equipment is pretty wild, and that’s just the equipment they’re guaranteed to use.

The staff also showed off some of the cool toys they get to use like the glove warmers and their portable skate sharpening kit they bring with them on the road.

It’s a lot easier to get set up at your home arena, especially when you haven’t been on the road for a while, but when it comes to getting the room ready on the road it takes the staff anywhere from 45 minutes to 1 hour.

Once the game concludes, pack everything up and repeat at the next arena.
