The hockey world received some heartbreaking news on Monday, as former NHL forward Jimmy Hayes passed away at the age of 31. The Dorchester, Massachusetts native participated in 334 games for Chicago, Florida, Boston and New Jersey but before he made it to the pros, Hayes scored the biggest goal of his life during his time with the Boston College Eagles.

Let’s flashback to 2011. It’s the annual Beanpot, the tournament in which Boston area schools, Boston College, Boston University, Harvard and Northeastern fight for glory. The Eagles found themselves in a 6-6 thriller against Northeastern but the game ended when Jimmy put home the golden goal.

Take a look:

Just awesome.

The Eagles didn’t capture the national championship in 2011, but Hayes won his title with the team in 2010 after the Eagles defeated Ryan McDonagh’s Wisconsin Badgers in the final.

A life lost far too soon. Forever a Boston College legend.
