Hockey fans knew this day could be coming soon, but secretly hoped it wouldn't come for at least another year so Roberto Luongo could get the sendoff he deserved.  The 40-year-old has been in the NHL since 1999, but as the old saying goes, all good things come to an end and Luongo's incredible career has officially come to an end.

Luongo announced his retirement in the most Luongo way possible, with the perfect tweet. He also followed that tweet up with a heartfelt open letter to fans about his decision to walk away from the game.

Luongo was a fan favourite, not just because of his hilarious tweets, but because of his overall remarkable personality on and off the ice.  One of the moments that resonates with us most from his career is not a save or highlight, but a speech he delivered after a tragic shooting in Parkland.

We'll cherish all of the records, saves, milestones, and tweets, but it's moments like the one above that we'll remember and miss most.  Congrats on retirement Lu and thank you for everything you've done on and off the ice.  We think we speak for everyone when we say we wish you nothing but the best in that South Beach retirement home.
