Seattle has been buzzing with hockey energy of late, and for good reason. The city is preparing for what is likely going to be the 32nd NHL franchise, and as a result there is tons of hype about what the team name may end up being.

The Seattle Times got a little impatient and decided to hold their own little naming competition.

After going through a month long competition that saw names like Sasquatch, Freeze, Grunge, Steelheads, and Krakens go under, the media outlet announced that the fan vote had led to two finalists. The Sockeyes vs. the Totems.

In the end, it was the Sockeyes that won. This is probably for the better, as some pointed out that the Totems may be an unnecessary appropriation of indigenous culture – a road that teams like the Kansas City Chiefs, the Washington Redskins, the Edmonton Eskimos, and the Cleveland Indians know all too well.

What do you think the potential Seattle franchise should be named? Let us know @bardown!
