Heading into the Olympics, we knew Simone Biles was going to be one of the main storylines. The supremely talented 24-year-old has become an icon in the gymnastics scene, and is widely considered to be one of, if not the greatest gymnast of all-time.

While it’s true she was a main storyline, it was not in the way any of us – including herself – expected.

Biles pulled out of a number of her events to focus on her mental health. She said she felt “the weight of the world” on her shoulders, and the pressure is what led to her decision.

The choice has led to a very split reaction. Some are saying she quit on her country, but we would prefer to focus on the support she’s received from her tough decision. In a world where mental health could always use more attention, the decision to normalize pulling out to focus on it is that much more respectable.

Now that her Games are completed, and she has a new silver and bronze medal to show for it, Biles shared out a message on her social media to reflect on her whirlwind of emotion in Tokyo. She thanks those that supported her, and showed gratitude towards the unique experience.

not at all how I imagined or dreamed my second olympics would go but blessed to represent the usa. I’ll forever cherish this unique olympic experience. thanks everyone for the endless love and support. I’m truly grateful

- leaving Tokyo with 2 more Olympic medals to add to my collection isn’t too shabby!

We’re sure this isn’t the last we’ve heard from Biles, and whether it is through her world class talents or her mental health advocacy, we’re looking forward to it!
