In what has been an especially celebratory summer involving Stanley Cup champions — thanks in part to Alex Ovechkin becoming one, no doubt — we’ve seen a fascination develop with doing keg stands out of the Stanley Cup, and even Jimmy Fallon got in on this when Braden Holtby came by his show.

This hasn’t gone unnoticed by the keepers of the Cup, and in fact, it may even prompt a response. Philip Pritchard, one of the keepers, has already had to advise a number of Capitals against doing keg stands with the Cup, as he told the Washington Post.

“We ask them politely not to do it ... We’re trying to preserve the history of the Stanley Cup. We don’t want any unnecessary damage to it or a person, in case they drop the person or he presses too hard or something.” —Philip Pritchard

The Post also adds that “future champions could be prohibited from replicating Washington’s trademark celebration.”

Obviously, there’s an argument in favour of preserving some sense of decorum with the Cup, and after the summer that the Caps have had, that's in real risk of being blown to dust.

On the other hand, there’s the argument in favour of fun, and that one seems especially compelling since we are still in the Summer of Ovi. It might only be right to argue in favour of more keg stands.
