The Joe Louis Arena has been the home of some of the NHL’s most historic moments. Since opening in 1979, it has hosted six of the Detroit Red Wings’ Stanley Cup Finals (1995, 1997, 1998, 2002, 2008, 2009), four of which they won.

Perhaps no player established them self as more of a hero in the arena than former Red Wings captain and current Tampa Bay Lightning general manager Steve Yzerman. Of the four championships won, ‘Stevie Y’ captained three of them. Last night marked Yzerman’s final visit to the historic venue, and he had a pretty hilarious response when asked if he planned to take anything away from his last trip.

The Cranbrook, BC native has established himself as one of the best general managers in hockey, but he could have said something a little more genuine and sincere!

The Lightning ended up winning the game 2-1 in overtime, so at least the general manager got his wish. It was only fitting that he won his last game in the place where he had so much success throughout his playing career.
