Hockey fans in Wellington, New Zeeland will have to wait a little longer to watch one of hockey’s best rivalries square off in the first ever international hockey game in the city.

After multiple delays that was supposed to see Team Canada take on the United States in a game of former NHL players, organizers of the Ice Hockey Classic decided to cancel it completely because of a burst pipe and strong winds.

The winds were so strong that they actually knocked over the boards at Westpac Stadium, causing a delay for the second day in a row.

Just under 10,000 tickets were sold for the game, according to Stuff.co.nz. Fans that purchased tickets will be given a full refund.

Former NHLers that were slated to play include Nolan Yonkman, Peter Holland, Chris Driedger, Bryone Froese, Zenon Konopka, T.J. Brennan, Richard Bachman and Aaron Johnson.

Since 2015, the Ice Hockey Classic has toured across Austrailia and New Zealand annually in July and August as a showcase to get fans more familiar with the game. Proceeds of the event go to the STOPCONCUSSIONS Foundation, a non-profit organization set up by former NHLers Keith and Wayne Primeau.
