We all knew the Houston Texans wouldn’t be shooting the lights out when they took the field for the 2021 season, and they’ve actually outperformed their expectations if we’re being completely honest. Even given their rock bottom expectations, there was a pretty egregious decision made by head coach David Culley and the Texans.

With the game tied early in the 2nd quarter, the Texans were trying to prove that they could hang with the heavily favoured Cleveland Browns. Unfortunately, they shot themselves in the foot after an offside call was made against the Browns.

Instead of accepting the penalty and getting another shot on 3rd down, they decided to decline the penalty and set up a 4th-and-1. Bold, but it clearly indicated that they were confident that they could pick up the first down yardage on 4th down.

Or at least, that’s what we thought.

They punted?!

There is no excusing this decision. There is no point in declining the penalty if you intended to punt it.

Twitter quickly filled up with users offering their own bewilderment, or simply providing hilarious replies.
