As the media world transitions from traditional cable television into more contemporary broadcasting mediums such as streaming services, film makers and distributers are signing rich contracts to provide the services with new, original content.

YouTube’s new streaming service – YouTube Red – is aiming to make a dent in the streaming world against services such as Netflix and Crave TV. They’re hoping that the new Karate Kid spinoff – Cobra Kai – can get the ball rolling in the right direction.

Set 30 years after the original film, the movie picks up with an angry Johnny Lawrence still upset about losing to Daniel LaRusso. Johhny is a shell of his former self and finds his life spiraling out of control by abusing alcohol, while Daniel is a family man happily enjoying his life as a car salesman.

The show will bring in a new generation of kids into the fold. As noted in the trailer above, Johnny spots a group of kids bullying a boy, which ignites his passion and to reopen the Cobra Kai dojo training center. Johnny takes the young boy under his wing, becoming his sensai just like Mr. Miyagi did for Daniel.

The series will be ten episodes long and will premiere on the streaming service on May 2nd. The film stars William Zabka and Ralph Macchio.
