Didn’t Phase Two of the NHL Draft Lottery feel a lot like the world of hockey was about to burn down? In a lot of ways, it’s just good for everyone that a neutral-ish, good-ish team in the New York Rangers won it. Imagine if the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Edmonton Oilers, or the Pittsburgh Penguins had won it?

With COVID-19 throwing a stick in the spokes of just about everything the NHL would usually be doing, the Draft Lottery was no different. With losers of the play-in round eligible for the vacant #1 overall pick, there was suddenly a 12.5% chance that eight teams – including some powerhouses – would win.

For the Oilers, there would have been a little extra outrage. While the Oilers still have yet to really put things together on the ice, they certainly haven’t been shy of opportunity. Four #1 overall draft picks playing on the same thing will do that.

In response to NOT getting the #1 overall pick, the Oilers nailed it with their response to a preemptively angry Hockey Twitter.

It’s almost like the team is saying “we are mortal in draft lotteries as well.”
