Alex Ovechkin continues to lurk on Wayne Gretzky’s goal-scoring record (894), and he’s going to have to continue his pace if he has any hope of catching him. In fact, he’ll need exactly 236 goals.

As it turns out, this isn’t just any random number. It happens to be the exact total that Ovechkin’s accumulated throughout the past five seasons. They went as follows: 53, 50, 33, 49 and 51. What are the odds of that?!

At age 33, it’s reasonable to believe that Ovechkin won’t be able to keep up his pace. But after another 50+ goal season, he’s shown absolutely zero signs of slowing down. The Russian stressed that he’s going to try to do it, but insisted that being in proper shape over the coming years is key.

As it turns out, the Great One is also rooting for Ovechkin to surpass him. After Ovi’s comments, TMZ posted a video of Gretzky saying he hopes the record is broken and that he would be “the first guy there to shake his hand” if it happens.

This will be one that hockey fans eye very closely over the coming seasons. Do you think Ovi will make history?
