Prior to puck drop between the Washington Capitals and Winnipeg Jets, Caps starter Braden Holtby had to sit the game out due to a last minute upper-body injury.

With Pheonix Copley getting the nod in net, the Caps were left without a back-up.

That was until they signed University of Manitoba's women's hockey coach Gavin McHale to an ATO as the team's emergency back-up goaltender.

McHale, the team's goalie coach, suited up in a pair of what looked like an old set of Connor Hellebuyuck's pad and took warm-up with the Caps. Based on his stance and the way he took some shots, he didn't look to shabby in net, as he shutdown one of the game's greatest snipers!

The 30-year-old coach, who stands 6'7" in the crease and played in the WHL, MJHL and AJHL, dressed for the Colorado Avalanche in Winnipeg last February after Jonathan Bernier was forced to leave the game with a head injury.

But unlike Scott Foster in Chicago last season, McHale never saw any game action.

Isabelle Kurshudyan reports that Holtby's injury isn't expected to be of the serious nature.

Given how serious Holtby's injury may or may not be, super prospect Ilya Samsonov could get his first recall to the NHL.
