You don’t accumulate 1,733 total NHL games from laying back and kicking your legs up on the couch. At least not according to Jaromir Jagr.

The Czech native enjoyed an illustrious career which saw him play for nine different teams across the league. Age proved to be an after-thought in his thirties, and he even managed to have a couple of strong seasons with the New Jersey Devils and Florida Panthers in his 40’s. At 45, Jagr is headed to play in his home town of Kladno after he cleared waivers in the NHL.

Fans and personalities have reflected on Jagr’s tenure in the league, pointing out his unique skill set and scoring ability. But aside from his Mullet, ‘Jags’ may be remembered most for the longevity of his career. The two-time Stanley Cup champ has been applauded for working out after games and recent details about his routine helps explain why he has been able to compete for so long. ESPN NHL reporter Emily Kaplan revealed that since the age of seven, Jagr has been doing 1,000 squats a day. According to her math, that adds up to nearly 14 million total squats.

No one loves leg day more than this guy!

NHL players typically resort to dryland training or the weight room to build strength, but it’s refreshing to hear that something as simple as squats have been a key ingredient for Jagr’s success. Jagr has been known to take exceptionally long shifts and this detail makes sense of how he was able to do so.

As he continues his playing days across seas, it will be interesting to see how much gas the 6’3, 230 pound machine has left in his tank. He turns 46 on February 15.
