At the beginning of the season, most hockey fans would have absolutely no idea who David Ayres is. Doesn’t matter how closely you follow the European leagues, the prospect pools, or any forgotten long term injury reserve occupants – you didn’t see Ayres coming into the league.

The Toronto Marlies facilities worker came into a game to take over the Carolina Hurricanes crease on an emergency backup goalie basis. He ended up taking home the win over the Toronto Maple Leafs, and as a result he entered hockey lore forever.

Media tours, sounding the horn in Raleigh, getting his stick enshrined in the Hockey Hall of Fame, it’s been a whirlwind for Ayres since then.

Now, he has his own hockey card.

While some fans scoff at the idea of an EBUG getting their own hockey card, others seem to be pretty excited about the idea.
