If you were to choose one sport that is associated with Christmas, it would probably have to be hockey. Hockey is played right around Christmas time, and the two share a lot of similar associations including snow, ice, and the cold. Even hockey socks look as though they could be strung up from the mantle and and stuffed full of goodies by the big man with the beard. To further the parallels, it's not uncommon for hockey teams to get into the Christmas spirit by throwing ugly sweater parties, taking family-portrait style photos, or even putting together short Christmas music videos.
In a nutshell, the sport of hockey and the season of Christmas both make the cold North American winter just a little more bearable.
On Monday, the University of Vermont women's hockey team got right into the spirit of Christmas when they released their very own rendition of a Christmas favourite, Jingle Bell Rock. The team dressed up in holiday attire (and beards) and piped out one of the stranger Christmas videos we've seen from a hockey team.
There are a few things that make this video particularly entertaining.
1. They have the real Jingle Bell Rock playing in the background.
This is an interesting tactic, as the listener can't help but make their own comparison. This doesn't just go for the voices themselves, but the blatant timing differences are impossible to ignore. But hey, beauty is in the eye of the beholder...
2. The amazing backdrop
Top-notch green screen usage right here. The backdrop ranges from Christmas trees, to snowflakes, to animated Santa's spinning around in circles.
3. The genuinely good time they were having
When you're accustomed to putting on a helmet and stepping onto the ice, it can be awkward to be placed in front of a camera and sing. The genuine smiles that seemed to come out of the team at the end of each clip makes it so much more enjoyable to watch. You can't call it cringe if they're getting just a big a laugh out of it as you are!
Happy Holidays, hockey fans!
