There was a time when Wayne Gretzky’s all-time NHL goals record of 894 seemed untouchable. Looking now, though, it’s within the realm of possibility that Alex Ovechkin, with 607 goals at the spry age of 33 years old, could get close.

Ovi is just one of a few high-volume scorers to have a similar goals per game average to Gretzky’s (.608 and .601, respectively). There’s no telling how age will factor in, but at the same time, it seems like Ovi could have plenty of career left to continue racking up the tallies.

If he’s able to eclipse Gretzky’s record, you can count The Great One himself as the first in line to congratulate him, as he tells TMZ.

Ovi already ranks 19th all-time in goals, but he still has a ways to go before getting to Gretzky’s number. Still, if he can keep this pace up for a few more years, then this milestone watch might really begin to heat up as Ovi approaches his late thirties. It would certainly be fun to watch.

He’s banking on good health to get there, but passing Gretzky is certainly on Ovi’s mind as well.

The 33-year-old #Ovi needs 237 goals to pass #Gretzky. Can he do it? 🤔
