In 1995, the Quebec Nordiques relocated to Denver as the Colorado Avalanche. A star-studded team that included Joe Sakic, Peter Forsberg, Adam Foote and Patrick Roy led the Avs to a 47-25-10 record and the Stanley Cup in their first season.

On Sunday, the Avs defeated the Anaheim Ducks — in rather dramatic fashion, as Mikko Rantanen scored the decider in overtime — and that marked win number 1,000 for the franchise.

It’s certainly a special moment for the Avs. After those first few years of success as a franchise — it’s hard to find any fault with two Stanley Cups — they’ve been in rebuild mode for a little while now, but their top line of Nathan MacKinnon, Gabriel Landeskog and Rantanen offers some firm hope for the future.

Plus, whenever they’re taking the ice in their sweet third jerseys, it’s hard not to get back on board with what the Avs are doing.
