For Leafs fans, the NHL playoffs may have taken a back seat on Sunday, as two of the team’s most exciting young forwards were competeing in the IIHF World Hockey Championship Gold Medal Game.
Mitch Marner and William Nylander had impressive performances all tournament and may have been stealing the eyeballs of Leafs fans for weeks.
In the end, Sweden and Nylander wound up with the gold and bragging rights over Marner for the next little while. So while you may have seen all the pictures of Sweden’s players celebrating in unique ways, Team Canada was on their way home, not all too thrilled with their result. You can see that in the face of Marner here, who had his picture snapped after arriving back in Toronto.
The combination of how young Marner looks with the upset face he’s put on as he turns back to look at the camera caught Leafs Nation’s attention as they quickly started turning it into a meme.
Sorry Mitch, we’re sure it’s all done in love and admiration.
We’re sure this will get plenty more action throughout Marner’s career as a Maple Leaf, right next to the video of him throwing down some crazy dabs.
