The United States defeated Canada for the World Juniors gold medal on Thursday night in Montreal. Following the game, a lot of American NHL players celebrated the victory on Twitter. One of the players who tweeted after the game, and was actually very supportive throughout the tournament, was Toronto Maple Leafs rookie Auston Matthews.

Since the 19-year-old plays in Canada, a lot of Maple Leaf fans were not pleased with his tweets.

Matt Martin noticed how ridiculous these fans were being and all the backlash his teammate was receiving because of his tweet, so he decided to join in on the fun.

Obviously the 2016 1st overall pick meant no harm by his tweet and was just supporting his country. Some people were clearly just joking around, but it's pretty ridiculous that others are actually mad about this and expect him to cheer for Canadian teams or Team Canada just because he lives and plays in Toronto. We’re guessing all of these fans who reached out to Matthews on Twitter praised him at one point or another and probably have his jersey hanging in their closet.
