Special coins are always a great way to commemorate a sporting event, moment or anniversary.

Hockey fans got a taste of that fact earlier this year when the Royal Canadian Mint celebrated the Stanley Cup's 125th anniversary with a limited-edition quarter.

Speaking of anniversaries, the Royal Canadian Mint will commemorate the Leafs' 100th anniversary with a special loonie.

While no designs of the proposed loonie have surfaced yet, based on the description it sounds like it's going to look awesome (via Canada Gazette).

"This Order authorizes the RCM to produce a commemorative $1 circulation coin that depicts the Toronto Maple Leafs current logo, flanked by the years “1917” on the left and “2017” on the right. Above the logo are two crossed hockey sticks: one stick used in the team’s early years and the other in the team’s modern years. On the coin’s outer ring are 100 engraved dots to highlight the team’s 100 years."

Now that fans have a coin to celebrate 100 years of Leafs hockey, they'd love a Stanley Cup to go along with it (and end their drought).
