The NHL draft is always a big night of movement in the league and while there hasn’t been a lot of trades, there have been some surprising picks in the top 10.

Far and away the most surprising pick for fans was the one at number five. No Canadians were expected to go within the top 5 of the draft by most scouts, but one ended up sneaking his way in. That was surprising, but what made it a little more shocking was that the prospect that snuck into the top 5 was one who wasn’t even ranked in the top 10 by most analysts.

Barrett Hayton from the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds was ranked 11th by Bob McKenzie and he ended up going fifth overall.

That wasn’t the only surprised in the draft though. Although it had been rumoured in recent days, people were still surprised when the Canadiens moved Jesperi Kotkaniemi up their rankings because he is a centre.

No matter how surprising the picks are at the time, nobody will know for many years how these picks end up working out.
