It’s been six years since the tragic passing of the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl KHL team.

Back on September 7th, 2011, the team was travelling on a plane to Minsk, Belarus to open up the 2011-12 regular season when it crashed following take-off.

Two people survived the crash just outside of Yaroslavl, Russia, including Alexander Galimov, who eventually died five days later following burns to over 90 percent of his body. Galimov played on the 2005 World Junior team that won a silver medal. One of his teammates was Washington Capitals captain Alexander Ovechkin.

The crash sent shockwaves through the hockey world spanning from Russia to North America, and still hits home for players like Ovechkin.

Thanks to Reddit/Hockey user “Mondeh,” a picture of Ovechkin wearing a special tribute patch to the team and his fallen friend.

Ovechkin recently switched back to CCM Hockey prior to the start of the season, and in the picture he’s wearing Bauer shoulder pads equipped with his classic “Great 8” logo. NHL players are creatures of habit, and often don’t change their protective equipment, so it’s hard to lock down a specific time period of when this photo was taken.

The Great 8 learned the sport of hockey thanks to his older brother Sergei. Sergei passed away when Ovechkin was just ten years old, and honoured his brother by having his initials stitched onto the gloves he wore for Dynamo Moscow of the KHL.
