Pavel Datsyuk is finally an Olympic gold medalist.

After failing to come away with gold at the previous 2002, 2006, 2010, and 2014 Olympics, the future Hall of Famer was on the ice when teammate Kirill Kaprizov fired home the overtime winner to give Russia the 4-3 victory over Germany.

Datsyuk accomplished a rare feat in the win, becoming the newest player in history to earn hockey’s ‘triple-crown’, which consists of winning an Olympic Gold, World Hockey Championship, and a Stanley Cup.

For many Russian players, winning a gold medal is the ultimate goal. Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin expressed his disgust with the NHL’s decision to not send its players to Pyeongchang, and even threatened to go regardless of the circumstances. Needless to say, it’s a big deal in the country.

Following the game, Datsyuk stated that he has “accomplished his dream,” and that he now has “no dream.”

Given he’s 39, Datsyuk’s comments shouldn’t be taken lightly. Could the end be near for the Russian superstar? Despite his age, Datsyuk has still managed to collect 35 points in 37 games with the KHL’s St. Peterburg SKA, but after winning an Olympic medal, the possibility of going out on top is available.

Throughout his career, Datsyuk has won two Stanley Cups (both with the Detroit Red Wings), two Olympic medals (one gold and one bronze), and a gold, silver and bronze at the World Junior Championships. It’s been one heck of a ride so far for the Russian captain.
