Twenty-seven seconds left on the game clock, trailing by four and you have possession of the ball on your opponent’s one-yard line with one timeout remaining. Most football fans would consider this situation to be a recipe for success for the team that ends up with the ball, but that wasn’t the case for the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl XLIX.

A lot of people expected the Seahawks to run the ball into the end zone and take the late lead before eventually capturing their second straight Super Bowl title. Instead, the Seahawks decided to throw the ball and it turned out to be a complete disaster as Malcolm Butler picked off the pass to secure the New England Patriots’ fourth Super Bowl title in franchise history.

Earlier this week, former Seahawks defensive end Cliff Avril joined the Dave Dameshek Football Program on Sports Radio KJR and was very upfront about how that interception changed everything for the Seahawks and ended any possibility of them becoming a dynasty.

Here’s a breakdown of what Avril had to say in the short clip from his appearance on the show.

“If we win that Super Bowl, I think we probably wouldv’e won another one within the two years that went by. I think the team would’ve bought in more into what coach Carroll was saying instead of going the opposite way of ‘Hey, this is what we thought the foundation of the team was’ and that’s not what happened on that particular play.”

Avril also went on to talk about how a lot of players were “turned off by the message” and it makes a lot of sense considering the team has completely revamped their roster over the past couple of seasons.
