Fans are always fascinated with trades in professional sports, but very rarely do we get to see how they are finalized or how they fall through.

Draft day might be one of the most open and one of the most active days for NHL GMs and the Los Angeles Kings decided to give fans a little peak behind the curtain. The Kings’ Director of Amateur Scouting, Mark Yannetti, was mic’d up for the second day of the draft and the Kings posted video including a couple of the conversations he had.

So, in that video, you can see that Pierre Dorion and the Ottawa Senators turned down a swap of the picks 32 and 33 (Sens would have picked 33rd and Kings would have picked 32nd if the trade went through) with an additional 6th round pick (157th overall) going to the Sens.  Sens fans don’t seem entirely thrilled… but who knows what the Kings would have done with that pick.

On the other end of the trade spectrum, at about the 2:15 mark in the video, you can see the discussions and trade call as the team agrees to their trade with the Montreal Canadiens. That ended up being when the Kings sent a third-round and fifth round pick to the Canadiens in return for a second-round pick that they had received from Columbus (50th overall).

Keep an eye out for other videos like this if you want to see more trade talk, because the Canucks released something similar last year that showed a Canucks and Leafs deal that almost came to be.
