The season’s biggest off-ice story took another turn on Tuesday morning when Darren Dreger gave hockey fans an interesting update on William Nylander via Twitter.

It’s become pretty well-known at this point that during his contract standoff with the Leafs, the Swede has been keeping busy closer to home while practicing with the Austrian Hockey League’s Dorbirn Bulldogs. Today told a different story, however, as Dreger reported that Nylander was not on the ice with the team today.

Whether this means Nylander is being signed, traded, or simply taking a day off, fans are already speculating all sorts of different things.

Nylander has remained in contact with the organization, as he reportedly met with general manager Kyle Dubas in Switzerland. But with John Tavares locked up for the next seven years at $11 million per year, and Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner each due for a new contract, things could remain complicated for a while. Nylander has remained adamant about receiving a long-term deal.

Time will tell how this situation turns out and whether or not his absence at today’s practice was the result of something else.
