Patrick Marleau tied Gordie Howe atop the NHL’s all-time games played list as he suited up for his 1,767th career game on Saturday night.

Playing in his 23rd NHL season, Marleau was selected 2nd overall by the Sharks in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft and he cracked the lineup a few months later. When the Aneroid, Saskatchewan native made his NHL debut on October 1, 1997, the world was very different, especially the world of sports and pop culture.

Metallica lead singer and guitarist James Hetfield is a massive Sharks fan, and you’ve definitely seen him and his bandmates get the crowd going before important home games. The night Marleau made his NHL debut the band was most likely putting the finishing touches on their 7th studio album Reload, which they recorded 60 miles down from San Jose Arena. The album hit shelves about six weeks after Marleau’s debut.

 

Titanic wasn’t in theatres yet
 

Titanic might be one of the most popular movies of all-time, so it’s pretty wild to think about the fact that it wasn’t even in theatres yet the night of Marleau’s NHL debut. At the time of his first game, The Peacemaker starring George Clooney and Nicole Kidman were sitting atop the U. S. Box office leaderboard, but was overtaken by Titanic a month later after its release at the Tokyo International Film Festival.
 

One-year anniversary of N64 in North America
