Rod Brind’Amour is of the most important Carolina Hurricanes of all-time. He sits fourth on the franchise’s all-time points list, along with other “all-time Hurricanes leaders” lists, and he also captained the team to its only Stanley Cup championship.

He’s also Carolina’s current head coach.

That’s quite a career for the Hurricanes legend. With that much time around one team, Brind’Amour has slipped right into Carolina Hurricanes culture. Most recently, that meant participating in the Canes annual 5K.

While there were lots of familiar Hurricanes players at the event, Brind’Amour and assistant coaches Jeff Daniels and Dean Chynoweth were the only Hurricanes to participate in the race.

To everyone’s surprise, the still-fit Brind’Amour was able to place in the top ten despite racing more than 800 other people, many of whom were younger than ol’ Rod.

Along the way, Brind’Amour made sure to catch up with some of the Canes’ faithful.

The real question is, how would he have fared if the Hurricanes players HAD decided to participate?
