The Detroit Red Wings had a lot of history in Joe Louis Arena, so a lot of people were fairly disappointed when they heard the team would be moving to Little Caesars Arena.

Every time one of these historic homes gets shut down, different parts of the arena end up in the hands of some of the biggest fans and that same thing is happening with the Joe Louis Arena. Starting tomorrow, bids are open for one of the Octopi that hung in the rafters during playoff time.

The arena only had two of these hanging and they were meant to represent the 16 wins needed to bring home the Stanley Cup. The Octopus became a kind of unofficial mascot for the Red Wings to go along with the tradition of fans throwing them on the ice.

Luckily the tradition has continued into Little Caesars Arena, but we’ll have to wait until they make the playoffs again to find out if this tradition will continue.

If it does, one thing is for sure: There will be new Octopi.
