In November, Stephen Hillenburg, known as the creator of SpongeBob SquarePants, passed away at the age of 57. Considering the cultural impact of the show, it should come as little surprise that there has been an outpouring of support and recognition among fans for Hillenburg since.

That includes a petition to perform “Sweet Victory,” a song featured in the SpongeBob show, at the Super Bowl, which was recently able to eclipse one million signatures. “As a tribute to his legacy, his contributions to a generation of children, and to truly showcase the greatness of this song, we call for Sweet Victory to be performed at the Halftime Show,” reads the description.

The song in question was performed by SpongeBob and his marching band in one of the more memorable episodes from the show, “Band Geeks.” Believe it or not, the Twitter account for Mercedes-Benz Stadium, where this year’s Super Bowl will be held, has already acknowledged the petition.

The headliners for this year’s Super Bowl halftime show has yet to be officially anounced, and it remains to be seen if the organizers can find a way to include the SpongeBob nod in the show. However, it’s quickly becoming clear that this would mean a lot for a lot of people — and it would certainly be a nice way to honor Hillenburg.
