Once upon a time, Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson were two of the most feared names in golf. The two Americans always had somewhat of a friendly rivalry, and both were among the top five golfers in the world for a long, long time. Between the two of them, they hold seven Masters titles (four from Tiger, three from “Lefty”), to go along with 12 other major championships combined (10 of those were Tiger). It’s understandable how excited golf fans were when they found out the two would be paired at the Players Championship.

Mickelson went on to fuel that excitement a little further when he suggested a high-stakes head to head match instead of all that pesky tournament business. He was saying it with a joking manner, playing into the anticipation stemming from the pairing, but he went on to hilariously offer up some fightin’ words in the direction of Woods.

If there were ever a time in their careers to be joking about taking down the most decorated golfer in the world, it’s now. Mickelson still ranks 19th in the world, while a resurging Tiger is climbing his way back – currently sitting 92nd.

While they won’t be the favourites to take home the championship, the two will certainly be fun to watch. What is this, 2002?
