Andrew Luck sent shock waves through the football universe by retiring from the NFL just two weeks before the kickoff. While a late-offseason retirement will always come as a shock, it is made even more shocking by the fact that he is only 29 years old. Many thought this may be the year of Andrew Luck, but his mental health wouldn’t allow it.

In a very unfortunate circumstance, the news came out DURING a Colts’ preseason game. While Luck has reportedly told the Colts staff well in advance, fans at Lucas Oil Stadium all found out in and around the same time.

It made for a messy scene, as Luck left the sidelines – perhaps for the last time – to a shower of boos from the home crowd.

While it doesn’t sound good on the surface, they likely aren’t booing out of anger so much as they are booing out of despair. Nobody can fault Luck for retiring if he felt it’s what best for his own health, but it does leave the Colts in a less-than-desirable situation.

Jacoby Brissett will take over as the Colts’ starting quarterback.
