Last week, a shooting at Santa Fe High School in Texas tragically claimed the lives of eight students and two teachers.

As their series against the Golden State Warriors returned to Houston for the first time since the shooting, the Rockets commemorated the victims before Game 5 on Thursday night. A moment of silence was held before the game, and the national anthem was sung by the high school choir in attendance along with first responders and others from the school:

The Rockets also invited Houston native and popular rapper Travis Scott to speak before the game. He recognized the students at the high school and offered them his support, saying, β€œY’all the strongest people on this earth. Thank you for being heroes to all of us.”

The Rockets will also wear a special jersey patch that reads β€˜Santa Fe H.S.’ to honour the victims, and fans in attendance received a shirt that read, "Houston Strong."

It’s a nice gesture by the Rockets to reach out to their community in a time of crisis. Before the game, Rockets point guard Chris Paul spoke out on the topic of gun reform, as did Warriors coach Steve Kerr. It’s empowering to recognize that the sport community cares about the society around it, and hopes to use its platform in a positive way.
