The Canadians have been showing up at the US Open, but no one has been more of a pleasant surprise than Leylah Annie Fernandez. In the third round, she shocked the tennis world by defeating Naomi Osaka. Today, her US Open run continued, and just a day before her 19th birthday, Fernandez advanced to the quarterfinals.
With the win over Angelique Kerber, Leylah Annie Fernandez is off to her first ever Grand Slam quarterfinal. And she accomplished that by picking up back-to-back wins over World number 1’s.
