Jason Voorhees from Friday the 13th is one of, if not the, most popular horror movie villains of all-time. And with today being his special day, Friday the 13th, we thought we’d try to uncover the mystery behind the iconic mask. You would think that such a significant symbol of horror movies in pop culture would have an illustrious back story attempted to be told my multiple people. But instead, the internet is filled with a bunch of no-good reasons that truly doesn’t explain why he chose the hockey mask.

The main reason seems to be that after a fight with Donnie, where he gets his burlap sack mask ripped off, he goes to pick up the sack and instead finds a goalie mask in a crate, which he happens to kind of like better. That’s it!? That can’t be it! Well, that’s all that’s out there, so we’ve taken it upon ourselves to give a back story to the legendary goalie mask of Jason.

Jason had hockey trophies

C'mon, there's no way Jason wasn't a hockey player. In fact, there are online reports that Jason actually had hockey trophies in his bedroom, which means he (or someone he loved) once loved the sport. This is all according to horror movie buff Dolfan.

“Best Answer: If you notice when they are in his old bedroom there are hockey trophies there. So I would assume he played hockey. thus the mask caught his attention.”

Jason was a goalie… A dirty goalie

As a young kid playing hockey, the coaches always told you to get in front of the net, but not when you were playing against Jason in net. No, Jason would strike fear into other little kids with his aggressive play style, always chopping the back of legs and poke checking your skates. And don't you dare go digging after the whistle because before you knew it, you'd have Jason's glove hitting you in the face in a matter of seconds.

A bad line change was the beginning of the Jason he became

Jason was actually a pretty good goalie, despite his temper, which led to him playing at a high level. Jason put his team completely on his back in the final year he played and led them all the way to the Finals. Not ever getting much goal support, Jason's team relied on him for a big performance every game. But in a 0-0 game with 2 minutes left in the 3rd period, his team attempted a terrible line change, which led to a 2-0 breakaway. Despite Jason's best efforts, the other team scored and won the championship, leaving Jason upset with his teammates' bad line change and led to him never playing hockey again and never trusting anyone for the rest of his life. All of that anger that he channeled towards stopping the puck, had nowhere to go, but to boil up inside.

Once Jason's rage led to his killing sprees, he then found that goalie mask after killing Donnie, which reminded him of all the pain that the game had caused him. For the rest of his days, Jason would wear the mask to remind himself of the pain that line change caused him and to NEVER trust anyone again.
