Last night’s contest between the Detroit Red Wings and Montreal Canadiens is one the former would love to forget.

The Canadiens entered the match on a four-game winning streak and kept things rolling with an eye-opening 10-1 victory. Montreal scored eight straight goals before Luke Glendening managed to put one home halfway through the third period for the Red Wings. Detroit has now dropped seven straight games and sit in fifth place in the Atlantic Division with a 10-12-5 record.

Red Wings captain Henrik Zetterberg was inevitably upset after the game, and didn’t hold back when discussing the loss. He went on to call it an embarrassment to any player who has ever worn ‘the wing wheel’.

He also admitted the team is “terrible” when not playing well, and emphasized the team must be better.

Zetterberg has been with the organization for all 15 seasons of his career, so his words shouldn’t be taken lightly. The franchise’s biggest loss came to the Toronto Maple Leafs on January 2nd, 1971 in a 13-0 stomping from the Toronto Maple Leafs.

There’s something about playing against Canadian teams that apparently doesn’t sit well with the Red Wings.

Every team has its off game, but allowing 10 is reason for concern. With another dreadful loss, the Red Wings are quickly heading in the wrong direction and need to get into a rhythm or they’ll risk missing the postseason for the second time in a row after qualifying every year from 1991-2016.

A nine-goal loss isn’t exactly the best way to turn a team’s confidence around.
