The Montreal Canadiens showcased some of the strangest examples of irony in hockey on Saturday night with their crushing 10-1 win over the Detroit Red Wings.

22 years ago to the day, the Red Wings put nine goals past Patrick Roy, which ended Roy’s tenue with the Habs after he infamously walked over to Habs team president Ronald Carey and told him that “it’s my last game in Montreal” after Roy alleged that head coach Mario Tremblay left him in the net to humiliate him.

Roy was then dealt four days later by the club along with Mike Keane to the Colorado Avalanche for  Jocelyn Thibault, Martin Rucinsky and Andrei Kovalenko.

So, when was the last time the Habs scored ten goals in a game? Back on December 10th, 2016, against none other than the Colorado Avalanche.

The Habs are playing some fantastic hockey since the return of Carey Price last Saturday, having won five straight and have given up just six goals over that duration, while the Wings dropped their seventh straight.

Only Max Pacioretty, Jeff Petry, David Schlemko and Karl Alzner were held without a point in Saturday’s beatdown.

As if the night couldn't get any more dramatic in La Belle Province, an octopus was even thrown on the ice!

So, will Petr Mrazek be traded by the Red Wings anytime soon?
