For the past two weeks, Canada’s flags have flown at half-mast. The country is mourning the death of 16 crash victims after the SJHL hockey team Humboldt Broncos’ bus collided with a transport truck in Saskatchewan.

As a result, there has been a massive outpour of support for the victims, as well as their friends and families. While it came in many forms, the most prevalent way Canada showed its support was through a GoFundMe campaign that grew way more rapidly than expected.

In the end, the campaign reached $15,185,500 after setting an initial goal of $4 million. While shattering their expectations, the campaign also shattered records when it became the largest Canadian GoFundMe campaign ever, and the 2nd largest of all-time (the largest being TIME’S UP Legal Defense at over $21 million). The campaign didn’t just come from Canada, in fact there were donations from 142,031 people across 80 countries.

On top of the campaign, the outreach of support has reached Humboldt in a number of different ways, including the generous support offered by the world of sports.
