Despite shake-ups at head coach and general manager, Jesse Puljujarvi and the Oilers appear to be headed towards a split. Currently a restricted free agent, the Finnish forward made his desire for a trade known this summer.

One of the reasons for his demand may have to do with role. Since being drafted with the fourth overall pick in 2016, Puljujarvi has struggled to find his fit with the Oilers, and he told Finnish television station Laari that he was hoping for a top-six role elsewhere.

It would be pretty surprising if Puljujarvi could get that chance elsewhere, at least to begin with. Before an injury cut his season short, Puljujarvi had just 4 goals and 5 assists through 46 games.

Maybe a change of scenery could help, but he’s got a ways to go to get to a top-six level. Until his request for a trade is met, though, Puljujarvi is holding out in Finland.
