The San Jose Sharks will hopefully get a boost for what they hope is a long playoff run.

That would be in the form of Joe Thornton, who hasn’t played since January 23rd after suffering a knee injury against the Bruins. Thornton’s status is still uncertain when he could return to the Sharks lineup, but all indications appear that Thornton is making progress after undergoing surgery to repair his right MCL.

During Saturday’s game against the Flames, NBC Sports Bay Area cut to a clip of Jumbo lightly skating on the ice. But it wasn’t just the the red shirts and Thornton that decided to take in the morning skate prior to puck drop.

The 38-year-old Thornton took the ice with his son, River. Although Joe is known more as a playmaker than a scorer, Jumbo took it upon himself to teach River on how to celebrate after finding the back of the net.

Isn’t that cute? You’ll notice that River is wearing a HC Davos jersey, the Swiss club that Thornton signed and played with during the 2004-05 and 2012-13 lockouts. What’s interesting about that is Thornton met his wife while playing over in Switzerland, so it’s pretty neat to see the jersey he wore now being worn by his son.

Rehabbing out on the ice with only a coach or trainer can get boring at times, but you know Jumbo’s been having a blast skating around with his young son.

On Friday, Thornton updated his status after finally taking part in a practice with his teammates.

In 47 games during his 20th NHL season, Thornton has potted 13 goals and 23 assists for 36 points in 47 games.
