This summer ahead of free agency, John Tavares met with six teams before signing his contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Of the six teams Tavares met with, the Montreal Canadiens were not one of them despite their interest in signing him to a deal and on Monday, the Leafs' superstar opened up about his decision not to meet with the Habs.

“There are a lot of great teams, a lot of great franchises in the NHL,” Tavares said after Monday's practice. “I felt humbled to have the interest I had. You feel very fortunate to be in the position I was in.

"I met with the teams I felt were in the best situations that could be good fits for me and see what there was to offer. That’s why I picked those six teams, including New York. Those were the teams that I felt were the best fit that I wanted to interview with.”

One could argue that "fit" Tavares mentioned had more to do with the Habs not being in a position to consistently win now and in the future than the actual on-ice fit.

At any rate, the Habs will have to wait for the next star to hit free agency and hope the moves they've made pan out and once again attract star players.
