Former Toronto Maple Leaf Mats Sundin believes Auston Matthews has what it takes to become the team’s next captain.

The 46-year-old played 13 seasons for the organization during his career and knows a thing or two about what it takes to lead a team in Toronto. So far, the Swede has been impressed with what he’s seen from the youngster and didn't hesitate to compare him to one of the NHL's best in a recent interview.

The following is an excerpt from TheStar.com

“I will say it’s fantastic watching him play, seeing a young man maturing, developing even from last year, and he’s hardly even started his career yet. I have him right up there with Connor McDavid. The Leafs have waited so long to have a young franchise player to build around. He’s that player.”

Matthews wasted no time becoming the face of the Leafs’ franchise after he potted home 40 goals in his rookie season. Since, his name has been popular in the Maple Leafs' captaincy discussion. Later in Sundin's interview, he shared his thoughts on whether the 19-year-old is ready to take over the role.

The following is an excerpt from TheStar.com

“In my book, he’s obviously the right person to be captain, no doubt about that. He leads on the ice and you can tell he’s a good man off the ice.”

Some very strong words from the former captain

Sundin isn’t a stranger to Toronto’s fierce market, as he endured both good, and bad season while playing in the city. His words are noteworthy and definitely should not be taken lightly by anyone.

The Leafs are one of just four teams in the NHL without a player donning a ‘C’. The discussion has recently cooled down, but the youngster's name will likely be the frontrunner when it heats up again.

So with all of this said, do you believe the 19-year-old is ready for the responsibility?
