Sometimes it is difficult for fans to see the salaries of their favourite athletes when they sign increasingly large contracts. The millions of dollars being thrown around like it’s loose change is hard to fathom sometimes, and the fact that an NHL entry-level contract comes in at nearly a million dollars is also a pretty nice looking starting salary.

While some find it tough to accept the huge salaries, it does allow room for athletes to do some good if they choose. Matt Murray got the memo, and he announced an initiative that will benefit two charities for every single save he makes.

According to the Pens’ website, the $30 for every save will be divided between three charities. The first $15 will go to Ward Home in Pittsburgh, and the second $15 will be donated between two charities in Murray’s hometown of Thunder Bay, Ontario – Children’s Aid Services and Dilico. All three are youth-based charities.

As the Penguins mentioned, that donation format would have resulted in $38,700 last year.
