Advances in technology have changed the way a lot of jobs are done now and that includes how reporters do their job.  Phones in particular have changed the way reporting is done as you no longer need a microphone to record audio and it's much more convenient.

That being said, in a hockey market like Toronto, there are a ton of reporters at every game and sometimes it takes creativity to ensure you're able to get audio during a scrum.  We saw what kind of creativity it takes Wednesday night during Mitch Marner's scrum after Toronto's win over San Jose.

 

The device that caught Marner's attention was a selfie stick that had a phone on it.  It was being used by David Shoalts of the Globe and Mail in order to get audio and Marner's reaction to seeing it was fantastic.

After the moment went viral on social media, David responded in a playful way, too.
