Former Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz was shot in the back on Sunday night in his home country of the Dominican Republic.
Felix Durán Mejia, a spokesman for the Dominican National Police, confirmed the report to ESPN's Marly Rivera.
Ortiz was sitting down at a table at Dial Discotheque in Santo Domingo when a gunman got off a motorcycle and approached him before firing a bullet that "went through his stomach."
According to the latest reports, Ortiz is in stable condition following surgery.
