An old football video game is finally making its return.

On Tuesday morning, The NFL and 2K Games announced a new agreement that will see the latter produce a new football game. In its release, 2K stated “the games will be non-simulation football game experiences,” meaning 2K won’t be producing a direct competitor to the Madden series. According to 2K Senior VP of Sports Strategy and Licensing Jason Argent, the game is set to launch in 2021. Per IGN, this will mark the first time a football game will be available from a company other than EA since ESPN’s NFL 2K5 in 2004, after which EA signed a long-term exclusive deal with the league.

According to the Canadian Press, the game could be seven-on-seven “that mimics backyard neighborhood football”. NFL Vice President and Head of Gaming eSports Rachel Hoagland said the two sides have been working on a deal “over the course of the past couple of years.”

2K has dominated to the basketball world over the years so it will be interesting to see how they make a comeback in football.
