Hockey seems to be getting more and more concerned about player safety. With concussions and player discipline being right at the centre of the discussion, and suspensions and fines getting handed out like Halloween candy, you aren’t seeing quite as much rough-housing as you did in the old days.

But it’s certainly not completely gone, and Merrick Rippon proved that with a huge open-ice hip check on Soo Greyhounds Robert Calisti.  

 

 

Ah yes, the vaunted hip check. To be fair, it almost looked as though Calisti could have landed it. It was THAT complete of a flip. If you’re going to receive a hip check, this is almost the safe way to do it. Otherwise you’re looking at..
