Whenever the Ottawa Redblacks have called upon their kicker this season, they’ve watched a model of consistency at work. In Lewis Ward’s first game in the CFL, he missed a field goal attempt from 48 yards out. Through 44 attempts in his rookie season, that remains his only miss.

Now, Ward is a CFL record-holder. Against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Friday, he set a new kicking record with 40 consecutive field goals made, breaking the high-water mark previously set by Rene Parades of the Calgary Stampeders.

Not bad for the rookie! Ward had already broken the rookie record of 21 straight field goals long ago, and with this, cements himself along CFL veterans in the history books.

Before coming to the CFL, Ward played for the University of Ottawa and ranked among the best kickers in U Sports history — his 89 field goals for the Gee-Gees are only second all-time to Johnny Mark for the University of Calgary.
