Sean Monahan and his line had a rough first round against the Colorado Avalanche and today we found out a partial explanation for some of their struggles.

This mainly applies to Monahan, but it obviously affects everybody on his line. Initially, Monahan said he was not injured, not wanting to make any excuses for his play, but Flames GM Brad Treliving later revealed that he did have a crack in his thumb.

It’s not quite a broken leg like Nikolaj Ehlers was revealed to have played with earlier today, but any time you’re playing with a broken bone, that’s pretty shocking. The Flames surprised everyone this season with a bounce back year, going from 11th in the Western Conference to 1st.

They’ll definitely be expecting more next season.
